Admission and Registration
Entrance requirements
The policy of the school is to accept students who, as a minimum, have graduated from high school or obtained a GED certificate.
ATS encourages applicants to schedule a personal interview with the school administration to determine, with reasonable certainty, whether the chosen program meets the needs of the applicant. The interview establishes the level of the program needed by the individual and provides an opportunity for the applicant to ask any questions he or she may have about the school.
Only those applicants who have an informed interest in a program of study and who are dedicated to finding employment in the related field upon completion of the program should consider registering for a program. The enrollment of any applicant whose work schedule or other commitments overlap with their training hours will be rejected.
All candidates for admission to ATS are considered on individual merits, without discrimination on the basis of age, creed, national or ethnic origin, race, color, sex, marital status, handicap, political affiliations or beliefs. It is the student’s responsibility to make any disability known to the Program Administrator.
Students Whose Native Language is not English
Persons whose primary language is not English and are interested in attending English for Professionals classes are required to take the ESL assessment in order to be placed in proper level of ESL classes.
Admission Procedures for Nursing Students
Schedule a pre-entrance test and pay the testing fee.
Meet with an Admission advisor to discuss the results.
If you achieved a satisfactory score, submit an application with a registration fee of $30.00. You will be entitled to a refund if you cancel your application in writing in five (5) business days.
Schedule the placement test to be placed in the proper level of math and English classes. See the placement policy for the exemptions.

Legal Limitations for Nurse Licensure
The Nursing Programs Administrator assumes the responsibility for making available to applicants to the ATS Nursing Programs the information regarding legal limitations for state licensure.
Admission or graduation from the nursing program does not guarantee obtaining a license to practice nursing. Licensure requirements and the subsequent procedures are the exclusive right and responsibility of the Ohio State Board of Nursing.
Students must satisfy the requirements of the Nurse Practice Act: statutes, rules and regulations independently of any college requirements for graduation. See Appendix A for legal limitations.
Placement Examinations
To succeed in the programs it is important for students to have the required level of English language proficiency and math.
Placement testing will be required for all entering students, unless they have taken the ACCUPLACER test within the past three years and reached the required benchmarks. Other options include having transfer credits in college-level English and math (excluding applied math), in which the student performed at level of “C” (2.00) or better, or have a score of 470 or more on the SAT-verbal (English) and SAT-quantitative (math) test. High school graduates who score a minimum of 21 on the English and/or Math sections of the ACT may be exempt from the corresponding section(s) of the test.
A student's placement into English and math classes is computed automatically using criteria established by ATS faculty and staff.
The Mathematics ACCUPLACER exam involves testing in both arithmetic and elementary algebra. Any student achieving at or above the required benchmarks in both subtests may automatically register for courses in the nursing program curriculum.
If a student does not reach the required benchmark on the arithmetic subtest and/or elementary algebra subtest he/she will be enrolled in MAT 0910, Developmental Math. These students cannot be scheduled into nursing courses. Students scheduled for MAT 0920 will be permitted to take nursing courses. The English ACCUPLACER exam involves testing in reading comprehension and sentence skills. Any student achieving at or above the required scores in both subtests may automatically register for courses in the nursing program curriculum.
A student who earns below the required score for reading comprehension and/or sentence skills subtests will be registered for ENG 0910, Comprehensive Reading and ENG 0920, Traditional Grammar. Additionally, students may register for general education courses and math courses (based on the placement rules for math).
Students who achieve at or above the required score for the reading comprehension subtest, and fail the sentence skills subtest, must take ENG 0920, Traditional Grammar, and may take simultaneously all other courses in the nursing program curriculum.
Credit for Prior Education
The school may grant credit for previous education. A request form for transfer credits must be completed by the applicant for review along with any other requested material. Students who have acquired general education credits at another academic institution of higher learning are required to submit all authorized transcripts as part of the admissions process, prior to the beginning of the first semester. Transfer credits will be accepted for courses that are similar in content and have the same number of credit hours. Students who have acquired nursing credits at another academic institution of higher learning are required to submit all authorized transcripts as part of the admissions process, prior to the beginning of the first semester. See Transfer Guidelines.
Credit for Life Experience
ATS may grant credit for previous experience and knowledge gained through training, professional experience, or some similar learning experience obtained outside the traditional academic environment. This policy pertains to both general education and nursing departments. Please see your Admission counselor for details if you are interested in exploring this option.

ATS may grant credit to a student who successfully passes a required exam in a particular course. New students in the PN and ADN programs will be permitted to test out of prerequisite level courses including PSY 1010, SOC 101, and ENG 1010 by receiving a score of 65 points or higher on the associated CLEP exam. An $80.00 fee will be assessed each time a student is granted credit for a course form a test-out exam. ADN students who are entering with PN licensure will be permitted to take the test-out exam for Lifespan Development (PSY 1020) if they have not had the formal course in their PN program. These students have the option to take an ATS-created exam or score 65 points or higher on the CLEP exam for Lifespan Development. An $80.00 fee will be assessed each time a student is granted credit for this course from a test-out exam. Please see your Admissions counselor for details if you are interested in exploring these options.

Readmission Guidelines
Any student who exits the Nursing Program for any reason must reapply to obtain another place in the program. All readmissions are subject to approval of the Program Administrator.
To apply for readmission the student must:
Meet all current entrance requirements for the Nursing Program (changes in curriculum and/or prerequisites may occur).
Submit a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s most recent primary clinical faculty/teaching assistant. If the student is a first semester Associate Degree student, a letter of recommendation from one of the science instructors may be used instead.
Present a petition letter that describes the strategies, behaviors or activities that the student will implement in order to enhance his/her success should he/she be granted readmission to the program.
The Programs Director may specify certain criteria necessary for readmission. Readmission criteria may include repeating of academic courses, work experience, remediation classes, counseling, or other activities to promote the success of the student.
The student is responsible for providing documentation of compliance with the readmission criteria. This may include a summary of work, educational, or other experiences obtained since leaving the program.
The student will be readmitted into the program of study that reflects their new graduation date.
Transfer Guidelines
ATS may grant credit for previous education. The Director of Admissions processes transfer credit. The final decision regarding nursing course credit rests with the Nursing Programs Administrator. Meet all the current entrance requirements for the college and the Nursing Program.
Provide official copies of college transcript(s) for all transferable credit. General education courses will transfer with no time limit. Science courses will transfer if completed within three years. Nursing course credit will be granted for courses taken in a previous institution provided the last nursing course taken is within one year of admission to ATS, and the course is compatible with the course equivalent at ATS.
Provide copies of course syllabi for nursing courses successfully completed, if seeking transfer credit from another nursing program.
